Short biography:

Vasiliki Boti is a member of E.DI.P. (Laboratory Teaching Staff) at the Department of Chemistry, Sector of Industrial Chemistry & Food Chemistry, of the University of Ioannina with the academic field "Environmental Control and Protection Technologies". She is the administrator of the interdepartmental "Unit for Environmental, Organic and Biochemical High-Resolution Analysis - ORBITRAP-LC-MS". Her research field includes the development and application of extraction methodologies for the determination of toxic micropollutants in a variety of substrates while she specializes in mass spectrometry as a chemical characterization technique. She has > 44 publications in international scientific journals and two chapters in books (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.) with more than 1000 citations, > 100 publications in international and Greek conferences (h-index: 18). He has participated in >21 research projects.

 

Research fields and activities

  • Chromatographic techniques and mass spectrometry, with emphasis on liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution accurate-mass mass spectrometry (LC–HRMS Orbitrap).
  • Advanced sample preparation techniques for the determination of toxic micropollutants and secondary metabolites in food, feed, environmental samples, wastewater and sludge.
  • Development, optimization and validation of modern analytical methods according to European regulations and standards with estimation of measurement uncertainty.
  • Suspect screening and non-target analysis for the identification of organic micropollutants, transformation products, and secondary or phenolic metabolites in environmental substrates and food/plant matrices.
  • Identification and structural elucidation of transformation products using high-resolution mass spectrometry.
  • Application of chemometric and statistical methods, including experimental design, ANOVA, PCA, clustering, heatmaps and artificial neural networks.
  • Toxicity assessment approaches, including in vitro and in silico methods, environmental and human health risk assessment, with emphasis on dietary exposure.
  • Study of the physicochemical behavior, environmental fate and degradation mechanisms of organic pollutants, including hydrolysis and photodegradation.
  • Technologies for the removal of organic micropollutants from aquatic systems, including adsorption and advanced oxidation processes.
